The Horizon Magazine spotlights LASER OPTIMAL research for the treatment of pancreatic tumors.
In the Lambda Lab of Politecnico di Milano, Prof. Paola Saccomandi and her team have devised a platform for patient-specific laser treatment of the pancreatic tumor.
A precise treatment is fundamental, as the pancreas has lots of important blood vessels, and we need to be sure that the laser light does not damage the blood vessels and cause bleeding.
In a continuing study with Dr. Di Matteo from Rome, 8 pancreatic-cancer patients so far have had their tumours scanned using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Calculations were then run for individual patients. This told the surgeon where and how much to direct laser at the patient’s tumour.
